What is pelvic health physical therapy?
Pelvic health physical therapy is a specialization that focuses on the abdominal and pelvic floor musculature.
This involves assessment of the function of the pelvic floor muscles - called the levator ani - which is located between the pubic, coccyx, and sit bones. This muscle is important for urinary, bowel, and sexual function. Pain in this muscle group can contribute to pelvic, abdominal, coccyx (tailbone), and back pain.
Diagnoses treated for pelvic health include:
urinary incontinence
fecal incontinence
pelvic pain
pain with intercourse
interstitial cystitis/bladder pain
endometriosis
abdominal pain
complex/persistent pain
pelvic organ prolapse
gastrointestinal disorders
constipation
Pelvic health focuses on these diagnoses and addresses orthopedic contributions such as low back pain or hip pain. Most people will require pelvic health treatment at some point in their lives, regardless of gender or age.
