Fecal Incontinence
Fecal Incontinence is defined by loss of fecal matter beyond the control of the person. It often presents with multiple symptoms:
Loss of formed stools
Loss of loose/diarrheal stools
Excessive wiping of the anus to clean up after bowel movements
Smearing of fecal matter in the underwear
Loss of gas beyond your control or with walking or rising from a chair
This can be due to a loose and weak pelvic floor, nerve injury, poor pelvic floor coordination, rectal prolapse, rectocele, history of grade 3-4 perineal trauma, or a history of rectal surgical interventions.
Physical therapy can address the muscular, nerve, strength, and coordination contributions from the pelvic floor and pudendal nerves. We also seek to understand your diet and water intake to ensure a holistic view of your symptoms.
